Winter Prep

October checklist for cutting heating costs before the cold hits.

Tip

October winter prep checklist

Tackling these before mid-November typically saves 10-20% on the winter heating bill.

HVAC

  • Schedule furnace tune-up (check carbon monoxide, flame ignition, gas pressure)
  • Replace furnace filter
  • Test thermostat setback schedule
  • For heat pumps: verify reversing valve operates; check defrost cycle

Envelope

  • Caulk windows and doors (interior and exterior perimeters)
  • Replace door weatherstripping if compressed
  • Add door sweeps to exterior doors
  • Inspect attic hatch insulation and gasket
  • Identify air leaks with incense smoke (visible movement = leak)

Plumbing

  • Drain and shut off exterior faucets
  • Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas (basement, crawlspace, garage)
  • Check water heater anode rod (if > 5 years old)
  • Drain a few gallons from the bottom of tank water heater (sediment removal)

Reverse direction

  • Switch ceiling fans clockwise on low (push warm air down without creating drafts)
  • Open south-facing blinds during the day for passive solar gain

Safety

  • Test carbon monoxide detectors (replace batteries if needed)
  • Check fireplace damper and chimney
  • Ensure dryer vent is clear (lint = fire risk)
