Tip
October winter prep checklist
Tackling these before mid-November typically saves 10-20% on the winter heating bill.
HVAC
- Schedule furnace tune-up (check carbon monoxide, flame ignition, gas pressure)
- Replace furnace filter
- Test thermostat setback schedule
- For heat pumps: verify reversing valve operates; check defrost cycle
Envelope
- Caulk windows and doors (interior and exterior perimeters)
- Replace door weatherstripping if compressed
- Add door sweeps to exterior doors
- Inspect attic hatch insulation and gasket
- Identify air leaks with incense smoke (visible movement = leak)
Plumbing
- Drain and shut off exterior faucets
- Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas (basement, crawlspace, garage)
- Check water heater anode rod (if > 5 years old)
- Drain a few gallons from the bottom of tank water heater (sediment removal)
Reverse direction
- Switch ceiling fans clockwise on low (push warm air down without creating drafts)
- Open south-facing blinds during the day for passive solar gain
Safety
- Test carbon monoxide detectors (replace batteries if needed)
- Check fireplace damper and chimney
- Ensure dryer vent is clear (lint = fire risk)
